Systems Psychodynamics

Our accompaniment of feminist and social justice organisations is grounded in systems psychodynamics, an approach that weaves together psychoanalytic thinking, group relations, and systems theory to explore and engage with the emotional and relational life of organisations.

It invites us to look at what’s happening beneath the surface—the unspoken assumptions, unconscious patterns, and invisible dynamics that shape how groups and individuals work together.

Working alongside organisations,
we explore and address:

Unconscious dynamics

that influence group behaviour, especially under stress or change.

Power and authority

and how they are taken up, projected, or resisted.

Organisational defences

strategies that may protect us from anxiety but hold back learning and growth.

How identity, trauma, and systemic oppression

manifest and are often perpetuated in organisational roles and relationships.

Why It Matters in Feminist and Social Justice Work

This is about walking the talk of our politics and values, ensuring that how we relate internally aligns with the world we’re working to build externally.

Feminist and social justice organisations hold bold visions for justice, care, and collective liberation, but are not immune to internal contradictions, hierarchy, or harm. Systems psychodynamics supports organisations in:

Bringing hidden tensions to light

Bringing hidden tensions to light, with curiosity rather than blame.

Understanding how systems of oppression, such as racism, patriarchy, and capitalism, affect identities and are unconsciously replicated inside even the most justice-driven spaces.

Creating space for healing and repair, especially in moments of conflict or transition.

Clarifying roles, expectations, and boundaries in ways that support shared power and sustainability.

Deep Change, Not Just Quick Fixes

By working with a systems psychodynamic approach, organisations often experience:

A greater sense of psychological safety and collective responsibility.

Leadership that feels more supported and shared.

A deeper capacity to hold complexity and difference.

Renewed energy and purpose across the organisation.
